The Valeron hurtled through the hyperspace void with a speed and grace that belied her size.

The crew dutifully snapped to attention as Taran entered the bridge.

Taran took position in front of her command chair. She addressed the navigator.

‘Report.’

‘We have identified the stolen fighter’s last position before the beacons signal stopped transmitting. The location is the planet Talios. Estimated arrival time three cycles.’

‘Talios?’ Taran recognized the name immediately. That was Lord Hatier’s home planet. Now why would they be going there she wondered. She pondered on this new development. Due to her rank she had access to top secret security files, and was well aware of the dark rumours that surrounded the Hatier family. Such things would normally have little interest to her. But if Alice was going there she could be in danger. And Taran was very concerned for Alice’s safety. No harm could be allowed to fall on the alien female. Not until she had given up her secrets.

‘Prepare the-’

Taran’s order was cut off by the dramatic arrival on the bridge of Cordos and four heavily armed humanoid soldiers.

Taran faced him with an icy glare.

‘What is the meaning of this? I did not call you to the bridge.’

In truth Taran had already surmised Cordos’s intentions. Cordos had a determined air about him. His usual deference had vanished.

‘Commander Taran, I place you under arrest.’

He snapped his fingers.

The soldiers with Cordos aimed their weapons at Taran’s personal guard. The Guards could only snarl and bare their fangs in impotent rage.

Another soldier took Taran’s pistol from her holster and handed it to Cordos. The rest of the bridge crew looked uncertain. A power play was now unfolding before them. How it was concluded would determine many a fate.

‘By what authority do you dare take such action?’ demanded Taran.

Cordos stepped closer.

‘By the authority of Admiral Caxton.’

So Caxton had decided to dispense with her after all, thought Taran. Not an altogether surprising move.

Taran met Cordos’s gaze, and burst into arrogant laughter.

‘And what is the charge?’

Cordos seemed a little disconcerted by her attitude.

He drew himself up. ‘Refusing to obey the orders of a superior officer. And treason.’

Taran smiled and nodded.

‘I am curious how the Admiral knew my actions. Someone must have been keeping him informed.’

The last statement was an accusation.

Now it was the turn of Cordos to grin.

‘I am an officer of the empire; I know where my loyalties lie.’

Taran gave him a shrivelling look.

‘Your loyalties are to me Cordos. Do you think I am so stupid or so blind as to be unaware of your treachery? I know you watch me, monitor my communications. You are a bad spy.’

Cordos lost his grin. He leaned close to Taran. He spoke in a hushed tone.

‘I was good enough to divine your plans Taran. I know about the alien female’s use of a teleport device to get aboard the ship.’

Taran was caught off guard by this revelation. Cordos pressed his attack.

‘Oh yes, I have seen the security scans, do not even bother to deny it. I have already informed Admiral Caxton of my findings.
